Phoenix Nigh

Phoenix Comic

Forgive me for putting in a quick shout for a new weekly comic that’s coming in January: The Phoenix. Well, Issue 1 swoops in on January 7th but there’s a free special taster Issue Zero right now, via a promotional code to be found in Waitrose Weekend magazine.

Marvellous reasons to get the comic:

  • It’s British
  • It’s quality
  • It doesn’t have plastic landfill stuck to the front
  • It’s original, ie. not a vehicle for some horrendous mega-corporate tat-selling enterprise
  • Kids will love it

Let’s start a British children’s comics renaissance right now!

Great stuff – I’ve ordered mine.

PS No need to go to Waitrose if you view the webpage source ;-)

My son and daughter both like the Beano and Dandy, so I am sure they will like this. How do I get hold of one and how much are they to buy?

I just got my free issue zero. I’m gutted that all the main characters of which you can tell the sex are male, with the sole exception of the pretty young orphan in the Pangaea story. Every time there’s an animal character and you can’t tell whether it’s meant to be a boy animal or a girl animal, you just read along a little bit till you hit a pronoun and *oh yeah, it’s a he, because that’s just the default*. I bet no one at Phoenix has even noticed this because, you know, *having all the protagonists be male is just the default*.

Yes, I agree that’s pretty bad. I’m going to send them an email about it.

They did begin to address my criticisms when I posted on the Phoenix facebook wall, but I don’t think they really get the problem around *defaulting* to male characters. But as they said it is only issue zero, and maybe it will start to balance out a bit more in future issues.
