About the Blogshanker
I'm Mike, a freelance illustrator and graphic designer. Samples of work and other info can be found on sheepshank.org.

I've written and illustrated a children's picture book, Grandad's Ashes, designed to help children come to terms with bereavement. It was published by Jessica Kingsley in March 2007. (Here is its Amazon.co.uk page.) I'm currently working on a second book, this time with a more cheerful subject matter.

I started this blog on a whim with a few scribbles back at the end of 2006. It survived through an overland trip from London to Singapore at the end of 2007, during which time I photographed the diary and emailed it to Blogshank HQ (my brother) to be posted.

There are plenty of photo blogs out there, and a few blogs by illustrators in which they upload their latest work. Even fewer whose illustrations are the blog. (The great Lewis Trondheim's Le Petits Riens is one.) I have a friend who works for a geological survey unit affiliated to Cambridge University, who tells me that back in the Fifties they used to take an official recorder on their expeditions. As well as taking records this person used to make sketches of the equipment, the environment, and the team at work. Wouldn't it be great sometimes to do away with the digital camera and reinstate the sketcher?

Anyway, I live on a narrowboat in Cambridge with Caroline and our two dogs. If I had to share the boat with anyone else it would be Hergé, and I wouldn't let him leave until he taught me everything. (He'd have to be alive, obviously...)

My email address is mike at sheepshank.org.
